Engineering Excellence: Meet Yacoub

Medical excellence at Holy Family Hospital requires careful coordination between medical staff and all Hospital departments. The surgeons, anesthesiologists and pediatricians work closely with the midwives, radiology staff, and nurses. Every single medical professional relies on specialized equipment that must be functional 24 hours a day in order to provide the highest quality care to women and children.

The Biomedical Engineering Department, led by Yacoub Sayeh, is responsible for the proper functioning and maintenance of all hospital equipment. Having worked at Holy Family Hospital for 16 years, Yacoub is dedicated to ensuring that all equipment functions as necessary to provide lifesaving care. He and his team work six days a week, but are on call around the clock should there be any malfunctions.

Holy Family Hospital holds special meaning to Yacoub and his family. He was born there and both of his sons were born there as well. “I am dedicated to the Hospital,” says Yacoub, “We own the best technology and lifesaving equipment. My whole family received the best care here.”

While he was the first in his family to study engineering, Yacoub inspired both of his sons to pursue the field.  Since the war began, finding spare parts and access to outside servicing has become increasingly difficult, so Yacoub and his team have become experts in finding creative solutions and working through challenges. Their diligence is essential; equipment in Bethlehem must outlast its expected lifetime, especially during this time of such uncertainty and turmoil.

Because of the war, anxieties in Bethlehem are high. Yacoub greatly values his time with his family and loves playing Playstation games with his sons to relax. He also spends a little bit of time each week researching new equipment and technologies to ensure that Holy Family Hospital remains on the cutting edge of medical advancement.
