Expert NICU Care in Bethlehem
Holy Family Hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides specialized care for premature and sick newborns in Bethlehem. As the primary referral hospital for expectant mothers and newborns in the region, Holy Family Hospital cares for some of the most medically complex babies, including infants born before 34 weeks and micro-preemies weighing as little as 16 ounces at birth.
Care for these babies is highly resource-intensive, requiring 1:1 staffing. Wartime conditions are triggering higher rates of premature and complicated deliveries; the NICU is always full. Recently, the Minister of Health mandated that NICU care must be provided without patient payment.
Comprehensive NICU Care
The work of the NICU has become increasingly complicated this year. The incidence of prematurity has risen by 22%. The number of babies staying more than 50 days in the NICU has increased by 60%. The rate of babies born abnormally small has risen by 56%.
Holy Family Hospital’s medical staff works diligently to care for these babies and, when needed, transfers them to surgical centers which can best meet their needs. In addition to organizing the transfers, Holy Family Hospital must guarantee all or part of the funding for the necessary procedure(s) — an expense that families simply cannot afford.
